Latest Endorsement: Ashby for State Senate
The results are in and, based on looking at our reader polls and balancing that among the opinions of The Journal & Press editorial board, we favor Jake Ashby over Alvin Gamble for state senate in our region.
Neither came to our Meet the Candidates event, but at least Ashby contacted us and had a reason why he could not attend.
The state senate district is large but we do see Ashby from time to time at public events. He doesn’t say a lot. He gives off the impression of a strong and silent type, or maybe he’s playing it safe and waiting for, say, the congressional seat to open up. He kind of reminds me of Lee Zeldin from when I lived on Long Island who had a similar laid-back style but had capable handlers working on his upward mobility.
In any case, we don’t think Gamble knows much about our part of the district. While it can be problematic for a paper to endorse too many incumbents, in this case, we feel the incumbent will represent us here in the Battenkill Valley better in the senate. A vote for Gamble would be ideological, which is fine, if a big-picture ideology is your political motivator, but on the lower end of the political spectrum, being a representative is about service. We have no evidence that Gamble would be good at that aspect of the job, while Ashby at least has been present and accessible.
Yes on Prop 1
Our audience polling as well as our e-board make it pretty obvious that a yes vote is merited here. Some ideologues may buy the arguments that this may allow some rights for people they are not comfortable with, but this is going to pass overwhelmingly, and should. Read our previous post if you don’t know what Prop 1 is.
Our Next Poll
Ah, gerrymandering! Our Assembly District is pretty evenly split between two districts. Which of these candidates are you likely to vote for?
