Below, find a new edition of “The Weekly Newspaper Podcast,” where we look at the randomness of Facebook.
But first we’re adding obituaries to our Substack daily newsletter because they often contain timely information, and our paper only comes out every other week. They still will appear in print for readers who aren’t online as well as for posterity.
Obituaries are written by the families and/or funeral homes with the goal of letting the community know of a passing. Here are the most recent ones we received:
Timothy Francis Holmes, 60
Timothy Francis Holmes died peacefully at Saratoga Hospital on Monday, November 4, 2024, surrounded by his siblings.
Born in New Fairfield, CT, in 1964, Tim was the fourth of six children to the late Gerard P. and Ann (Werner) Holmes. Tim was raised in Scranton, PA, where he graduated from St. Paul School and Scranton Preparatory High School. Growing up, Tim was a District All-Star, PA state qualifying cross country and track runner, and the founding drummer for the locally renowned band, The Inturnz. Tim loved music, often tapping out favorite numbers by Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, and Steely Dan.
Tim was a bright light with big brown eyes and a mischievous smile. Many funny stories could be told of shenanigans with siblings and friends in the Green Ridge neighborhood.
Tim’s interest in food chemistry and baking techniques led him to the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in 1986, where he developed a marvelous palate and his skills as a pastry chef. He met his wife, Suzy Quillio, the first day at CIA, and their romance began. Their early years included Tim flying from Boston to NYC to see Suzy. Later, they moved together to Boston to follow their culinary careers, then finally settled in Greenwich, NY. Some of Tim’s favorite jobs included baking at The Equinox Hotel, Manchester, VT, where he made many life-long friends; and at the NYS Governor’s mansion during the Pataki administration.
Over his life, Tim made wedding cakes for family and friends from the Hudson Valley (Paige & Shay) to San Diego (April & James) and Los Gatos (Cathy & Todd).
Tim loved the outdoors, especially visits to the Battenkill for rope-swinging, swimming, paddling, and fly fishing. He enjoyed hiking, camping, golf, cycling and basketball, and he always looked forward to his annual fishing trip with his lifelong best friend, Steve Cooper. He had a wonderful laugh and a twinkle in his eye. He was the king of kibitz.
Tim is survived by his wife of 37 years, Suzy Quillio; his siblings Karen Holmes of Forest Hill, MD; Nancy Holmes of Clarks Summit, PA; Todd (and Cathy) Holmes of Bethlehem, PA; Susan (and Jeff) Hunter of Clarks Summit, PA; and Patrick (and Missy) Holmes of Avoca, PA. He was also loved by his in-laws Lou Quillio, Ajijica, Mexico, and Pamela Schmuhl, Hampton, NH; and many wonderful nieces, and nephews.
A gathering will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024 from 3-6pm at the Cambridge Depot, 6 Broad Street, Cambridge, NY, 12866.
Donations in memory of Tim can be made to Battenkill Conservancy or Comfort Food Community, both in Greenwich, NY.

Arlene Bain, 77
With a spirit as vibrant as the sunflowers she cherished, Arlene Bain was a beacon of resilience, a pillar of thoughtfulness, and a purveyor of spirited laughter. A resident of Greenwich, New York, she left us on November 9th, 2024, but her radiant aura lives on, illuminating the hearts of those she touched. Like a sunflower follows the sun, Arlene’s life was guided by her unwavering commitment to her loved ones and community.
She was born December 20, 1946, in Long Island, New York, to the late Adolph and Loretta (Sullivan) Brunckhorst.
In her youth, Arlene graduated from Salem Washington Academy and spent the majority of her life in Greenwich, NY. Beyond her dedication to her family, Arlene served as a Public Servant in Washington County for over 40 years. Her roles were varied and impactful, ranging from a Sheriff on the road, a correctional officer in the jail, to a pistol permit clerk and court officer.
Her resilience was a testament to her character – steadfast, reliable, and always willing to lend a hand. Arlene’s adventurous spirit shone bright in her love for travel, often accompanied by her sister Linda, where each journey was a memorable escapade. She was a spirited Miami Dolphins fan, her competitive nature a delightful spectacle during game season.
Arlene’s love for beauty and serenity was reflected in her passion for flower gardening, horseback riding, and observing nature’s creatures. Her thoughtful nature was encapsulated in her treasured sunflower and crystal figurine collection, as well as her fondness for a good seafood dinner. Arlene was also a member of the American Legion Captain Maxon Post #634 ladies auxiliary.
Arlene was a beacon of love to her family. As an extraordinary mother to her daughters Laura and Kelly, she was their guiding star. She was a remarkable grandmother, ever-present at her grandchildren’s sporting events, cheering them on with the same enthusiasm with which she lived life.
Her heartfelt commitment to her community was evident in her many years of volunteering at Greenwich Central School and her close-knit relationship with her neighborhood “girls on the block.” The girls on the block on Wilson St, always supported one another, would check up on Arlene and were a tight knit group. Arlene’s family is grateful for their generosity throughout the years.
In addition to her parents, Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Bain, brother, Donald McPherson and sister-in-law’s, Sandra and Donna.
Arlene is survived by her daughters Laura Bain and Kelly Karp; grandchildren, Aydin, Krystina (Josh), Krystal, Kyle and Kayne; great grandchildren, Claire, Caleb, and Miracle; her sister Linda (John) Blanchefield; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers donations in Arlene’s name may be made to Canine Companions, providing service dogs to veterans in need, at www.canine.org.
Family and friends may call from 8:30 – 10 am on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at Flynn Bros, Inc. Funeral Home, 80 Main St, Greenwich, NY, 12834. Her funeral service will immediately follow at 10 am. Interment at the Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd, Schuylerville, NY, 12871 will follow her service at 11 am.
