Fatal Industrial Accident
Greenwich Parks Walk and Talk; Public Input Sought for Climate Resiliency Plan; Patriotic Songs
Because of yesterday’s heartbreaking news, we’ll take a break from our NY-21 candidate profiles today and resume tomorrow with the next in our series.
In case you haven’t heard, on our Facebook page yesterday we published a statement from Fort Miller on a tragedy there. The Washington County Sheriff's Office released this notice yesterday:
Sheriff’s Office Investigating Fatal Industrial Accident in Easton
According to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal industrial accident that occurred on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at the Fort Miller Company facility on Wilbur Avenue in the Town of Easton.
A maintenance employee was fatally injured while working on a piece of production equipment at the facility. The employee became entrapped in the equipment and had to be extricated by emergency responders. The employee was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The identity of the deceased is not being released at this time pending notification of the family and the results of a pending autopsy. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has responded to the scene and is conducting a parallel investigation alongside the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Middle Falls Fire Department, Greenwich Fire Department, Schuylerville Fire Department, and the Easton Greenwich Rescue Squad. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
Our condolences to the family and to all involved during this time, including coworkers and first-responders.
Washington County Announces Public Outreach Opportunities for Climate Resiliency Plan
Washington County is launching a series of public outreach opportunities to support the development of its Climate Resiliency Plan, an initiative focused on preparing communities for the impacts of climate change while identifying strategies to reduce long-term risks.
Residents, business owners, and community stakeholders are encouraged to participate by visiting informational displays located at local libraries throughout the County. Each display will include background information on climate risks and resiliency planning, along with QR codes linking to a public survey designed to gather community input. Displays will be available at the following locations for the first two weeks in June:
Cambridge Public Library – 21 West Main Street, Cambridge
Greenwich Free Library – 148 Main Street #2, Greenwich
Hudson Falls Public Library – 220 Main Street, Hudson Falls
Salem Bancroft Library – 181 S. Main Street, Salem
In addition to library-based outreach, the County will host a series of pop-up engagement events at community fairs, farmers markets, and other gatherings throughout the planning process. These events will provide additional opportunities for residents to learn about the plan, ask questions, and share their perspectives directly with project representatives.
This outreach effort builds on the foundation established by Washington County’s existing Hazard Mitigation Plan. The Climate Resiliency Plan will expand on prior work by identifying actionable projects and strategies to address climate-related risks, including flooding, extreme weather, and infrastructure vulnerability. Community input will play a critical role in helping to prioritize investments and ensure that the plan reflects local needs and priorities.
To take the Climate Resiliency Plan public survey, and for more information and updates on upcoming events, please visithttps://www.washingtoncountyny.gov/1341/Washington-County-Resiliency-Plan-Draft or contact the project manager, Norabelle Greenberger (ngreenberger@LaBellaPC.com).
Greenwich Parks Walk and Talk
The rescheduled date of the Greenwich Parks Walk and Talk will be on Sunday, May 31. Greenwich Gardener volunteer, Lisa Perkins, will lead a walking tour of the village parks and discuss their interesting history, including some of the “lost” parks. Greenwich is fortunate to have beautiful public spaces and volunteers with Greenwich Gardeners are working to restore the beauty of the gardens. The tour is free and involves walking about one mile through the village. Meet at the Veterans Park at the corner of Main St. and Corliss Ave. (across from the Y) at 2:00 pm.
Patriotic Community Sing
Prepare for the upcoming holiday season by singing favorite patriotic songs at the Hebron United Presbyterian Church Patriotic Community Sing on Thursday, June 18.
The event will take place at the former East Hebron United Presbyterian Church, 6559 State Route 22 in East Hebron. An ice cream social featuring make-your-own sundaes will begin at 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall at the rear of the church. The sing-along program, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary from 1776-2026, will begin at approximately 6:45 p.m.
Selections will include “Yankee Doodle,” “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “Let There Be Peace on Earth” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Brief historical background on each song will also be presented.
Guest performers will be the Union Village Ringers, a 10-member handbell choir from the Greenwich-Easton area directed by Debi Craig of Hebron. Their selections will include “Yankee Doodle,” two songs from “Oklahoma!” and “Ashokan Farewell” from Ken Burns’ documentary “The Civil War.”
The event is free and open to the public. Past and present members of the armed services are especially invited to attend. A tribute honoring those who have served or are serving in the military will take place during the program.
Free-will donations will be collected to benefit Everly House in Ballston Spa, which provides housing for unhoused female veterans and their children.
Additional parking will be available on the grass behind the church if the front lot is full. A ramp on the north side of the building provides access to the sanctuary if needed. For more information, call 518-854-3102.
Considering the somber nature of the lead of today’s newsletter, we won’t run a comic in this one. We will resume with the comics and political coverage in upcoming posts.
