When Will the Paper Come Out?
First some housekeeping regarding the print edition.
Because of the holiday, and because we’re breaking up the print run to flip some plates and turn The Greenwich Journal into The Salem Press, we pretty much had two potential print date choices for the “early September” editions (we don’t own the printing press so can’t just print any time):
Print tomorrow, Aug. 30, and mail Saturday, the 31st, or wait until Tuesday morning to print. Saturday, Sunday and Labor Day are not print options.
Considering the Salem edition is a new thing and we don’t want to rush its fine-tuning, I made the executive decision to go with Tuesday as the print date.
If you’d still like to get in an ad, letter, op-ed or a press release, there’s time — send it to editor@journalANDpress.com.
(And if you’d like to buy us a printing press, please let me know!)
Congrats, Cole!
We’ve been following the NFL trajectory of Greenwich’s own Cole Burgess, a wide receiver and kickoff returner. See previous newsletters for details on his rise from rural New York State Class D football to mere D3 SUNY Cortland (not exactly an NFL feeder school) to wowing scouts at a Pro Day combine and making the Cincinnati Bengals Pre-Season squad as an undrafted free agent, despite that the team already is stacked with more established wide receivers. It’s a great story!
While not making the team’s 53-man roster to start the season Sept. 8, Burgess was named to the team’s practice squad yesterday. Practice squad player can get called up at any time during the season. As well, they get paid quite nicely just to be ready to go in reserve. I’m sure we’ll see him in prime time soon!
Concessions Booth to Help Teams
Speaking of Greenwich athletics, the GCSD Booster Club recently received non-profit status and have been approved by the district to start doing concessions again at big games adjacent to the new turf field.
This will be ready to go by Sat., Sept. 7 at 1 p.m., for a non-league home game against Ausable Valley. The boosters will get the ball rolling during scrimmage games until then.
“The plan is to start slow this fall, and they have established a process for teams/clubs to request money or support,” Dr. Jennifer Steimle, district superintendent, said of the Booster Club. “We look forward to having this additional support for students and families of GCSD.”
Founding Booster Club board members are: Lacey Bentley, Ashley Dow, Ashley Clayton, Jackie Camacho and Rachel Clothier.
This will replace the last known Booster Club from the 1990s that morphed into a Greenwich Hall of Fame and is now dormant.
This new Greenwich Booster Club, a.k.a. the Cauldron Club, is expected to support all Greenwich Central School District junior and senior high sports teams from modified through varsity.
This newspaper and wonderful sports photographer Dan Pemrick will of course continue to follow these teams.
Blessing of the Animals
This paper is proud to be a promotional sponsor of a Blessing of the Animals event coming this fall at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Schuylerville. Save the date!
If you’ve ever been to one of these, you’ll know it’s a literal hoot! Whose animal doesn’t need blessing?
We Have More News, But…
We’re running out of space in this newsletter, so we will hold more local news until tomorrow.

Consider an Ad
Own a business? Consider placing an ad in one of our print editions! We can still get you into the “Early September” edition.
People ask us if the ads work. They work really well at raising awareness, if you have a product or service people need at a fair price. So if that’s you, give it a try! Just hit reply to this email to get started.
